If Football Nations Were Cars, Which One Would Lift the World Cup?
New analysis compares football's biggest nations with some of the UK's most popular cars to discover which teams can truly be trusted to go the distance
Posted on Jun 08, 2026
With football fans gearing up for the start of the 2026 FIFA World Cup this week, MotorEasy has revealed a different kind of league table by ranking the world's leading football nations not by trophies alone, but by reliability.
Inspired by the MotorEasy Reliability Index, which uses real-world warranty claims data to assess vehicle dependability, the Football Reliability Index measures the consistency of football's biggest nations based on World Cup appearances, tournament progression and long-term performance on the world's biggest stage.
The result? Germany comes out on top as the most reliable football nation of all time, ahead of Brazil and France. Just as reliable cars build their reputations through years of dependable performance, the Football Reliability Index rewards nations that consistently deliver results while avoiding costly failures and early exits.

Germany proves reliability beats glamour
While Brazil remains the most successful nation in World Cup history with five titles, Germany's remarkable consistency secured top spot. The four-time champions have reached eight World Cup finals and built a reputation for repeatedly progressing deep into tournaments, regardless of the generation or squad at their disposal. MotorEasy compared Germany to the Skoda Citigo, not the flashiest option available, but a vehicle renowned for dependability and getting the job done.
Brazil took second place, earning comparison with the Toyota Corolla, one of the world's most trusted and dependable vehicles. France completed the podium in third, reflecting their ability to reinvent themselves successfully across multiple footballing generations.
England's reliability problem
Despite being one of football's most recognised names, England ranked eighth out of the nine nations analysed. MotorEasy compared the Three Lions to the Range Rover Evoque, a vehicle with undeniable appeal, prestige and popularity, but one whose reliability credentials have not always matched expectations. England's sole World Cup triumph remains their 1966 victory, with near misses and disappointment proving a recurring theme in the decades since.
Small nation, big performer
Croatia emerged as one of the standout performers in the study. With a population of fewer than four million people, Croatia has consistently outperformed larger footballing nations, reaching the 2018 World Cup final and securing third place in 2022. Its footballing equivalent was identified as the MINI Clubman, compact, distinctive and capable of delivering more than many people expect.
Commenting on the findings, Duncan McClure Fisher, CEO at MotorEasy, said: "Football fans often judge teams by trophies, but reliability is about more than occasional moments of brilliance. It's about consistency, resilience and delivering results over time.
"The same applies to cars. Some vehicles generate headlines because of performance or styling, but owners ultimately value dependability. The vehicles that earn the strongest reputations are the ones that continue to perform year after year without unpleasant surprises.
"We thought it would be fun to apply the same principles we use in our Reliability Index to football and see which nations would come out on top. Germany's consistency across multiple generations made them worthy winners."
